EMVO and NMVO meet in Brussels
On 11 May 2026, the annual Statutory General Assembly meeting of the European Medicines Verification Organisation (EMVO) and the European Medicines Verification System (EMVS) community management meeting took place in Brussels. Latvia was represented by Inese Erdmane, Chairwoman of the Board of the Latvian Medicines Verification Organisation (LZVO).
At the EMVO Statutory General Assembly (SGA), participants approved the updated EMVO articles of association, agreed on the financial plans for the coming years, and elected three observers representing the National Medicines Verification Organisations (NMVO).
Inese Erdmane, Chairwoman of the Board of LZVO, was re-elected to the EMVO Board as an observer representing the small countries NMVO group, which includes Slovakia, Norway, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, and Slovenia.
Iwona McManus, General Manager of the Polish Medicines Verification Organisation (KOWAL), was re-elected as an observer representing the large countries group, which includes Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
Leonie Clarke, Chief Executive of the Irish Medicines Verification Organisation (IMVO), was re-elected as an observer representing the medium sized countries group, which includes Austria, Portugal, Greece, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Ireland.
During the SGA meeting, Matus Ferech, Head of Unit at the European Commission’s Directorate – General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), informed participants about upcoming changes in European legislation and their potential impact on the EMVS.
The EMVS community management meeting addressed current developments related to the evolution of the EMVS, including change management, the alert reduction and prevention programme, as well as the short term and long term EMVS strategy. An important milestone was also highlighted on 11 May – Italy was connected to the EU Hub production environment.
As part of the meeting, Inese Erdmane, Chairwoman of the Board of LZVO, presented the results of a public survey conducted in Latvia at the beginning of 2026, revealing public attitudes towards falsified medicines and experiences with prescription medicines.
