Attitudes of the Romanian population towards falsified medicines

Chairwoman of LZVO Inese Erdmane participated on the 11th of March in the conference “Patient Safety through Safe Medicines” in Bucharest, Romania. A study conducted by the host – the  Romanian Medicines Serialisation Organization (OSMR) , in collaboration with the National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices of Romania (ANMDMR), published in 2025 (author: Bogdan Voicu) on the issue of falsified medicines and the exposure of the Romanian population to these products revealed some surprising and alarming results.

Overall conclusions:

  • There is considerable potential interest in the issue of counterfeit medicines, but the level of knowledge in this area is low.
  •  At the population level, there is a clear rejection of the intentional consumption of counterfeit medicines.
  • A group of 7-10% of the population has the potential to intentionally consume falsified medicines. Others may do so unintentionally.
  • A mix of limited access to medical resources in the area, credulity, and permeability to poor quality information, lack of medical literacy, low education, and exposure to the sale of dietary supplements can increase the predisposition to consume falsified medicines. For the vast majority of the population, however, this remains a low risk.
