Expired medicines don’t need to be decommissioned

The unique identifier on that pack should not be decommissioned in the verification system by the end-users – pharmacies, wholesalers, healthcare institutions – if the specific pack has already expired.

The data uploaded by the manufacturers in the verification system also indicates the expiry date of the medicine. Therefore, decommissioning of an expired pack of a medicinal product can only generate unnecessary alert of technical origin.

The Latvian Medicines Verification Organization (LZVO) urges end-users of the system to pay attention to the expiration date of medicines and not to take unnecessary actions. LZVO also reminds that verification or decommissioning may only be performed on pack that is physically at the user's disposal.
